Feel Better Right Away
If you have an acute need to feel better there are so many things you can do in the present moment:
- Put on some of your favourite music
- Write out what you feel like and more importantly what you want to feel like
- If art is more your thing draw it out
- If dance is your things dance it out
- If you have a box of saved cards from loved ones telling you how great you are fish them out and read them
- Focus on your happiest moments and your most loved people
- Garden, walk, make love, sleep, cook … do whatever gives you joy in the present moment
None of these strategies will fix anything long term but they will help you feel better in the present moment so that you have ability to address the issues that put you in the space where you knew that you needed to feel better.
Some people seem to glide along, seemingly unaffected by the vicissitudes of life. If you have found yourself here you are probably not one of those people. Or maybe you have been until now but something has put the proverbial spanner in your works.
Meeting Our Needs
We have dreams, make plans and set goals because we believe the things we are trying to bring into our life will make us feel better, but how do we know that? Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes having the thing we’ve worked towards isn’t anything like we thought it would be. Sometimes if we meet one of our needs it’s at the expense of another.
The only way we can hope to feel better in a sustained way is to meet all our needs in a balanced way that also fits with our Quality World pictures. Dr William Glasser describes Quality World Pictures as being like a personal picture album of all the people, things, experiences, ideas, and principles that we have discovered or that we believe increase the quality of our life. The better we can do this the better we will feel but it isn’t as easy as it might sound.
